The House of Representatives recently voted on an Amendment to H.R. 4820, unveiled by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), that would have killed a federal mandate requiring all new vehicles sold in 2026 and beyond to come with a “kill switch” allowing the car to be disabled if a driver is deemed to be driving poorly or possibly under the influence of alcohol.
On November 6, Massie tweeted about the vote, which ended up seeing 19 Republicans vote against the amendment, meaning they support giving the federal government newfound powers to turn off people’s cars on a whim if drivers are caught driving the “wrong” way.
Those 19 Republicans include:
Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL)
Rep. Mike Carey (R-OH)
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA)
Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN)
Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY)
Rep. Mike Garcia (R-CA)
Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA)
Rep. John Joyce (R-PA)
Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-NJ)
Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA)
Rep. Young Kim (R-CA)
Rep. David Kustoff (R-TN)
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY)
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC)
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX)
Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA)
Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL)
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ)
Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA)
(Related: Back in 2021 at the height of COVID, Rep. Massie called for everyone at the CDC to be fired for lying about the “pandemic.”)
The amendment ultimately failed to pass in a vote of 201 for and 229 against. This means that if all 19 Republicans who voted against the amendment voted for it, it would have passed, protecting the American people against this planned government intrusion.
The amendment would have stopped certain provisions in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act from coming to pass. Massie stated prior to the vote that it would have defunded “the looming mandate that all new vehicles sold after 2026 be equipped with technology that can automatically disable vehicles.”
“Section 24220 of the infrastructure, investment and jobs act requires all newly manufactured vehicles to be equipped with technology to monitor your performance while driving and to prevent vehicle operation if the car so determines that you are not doing a very good job of driving,” Massie previously stated.
“Allowing the car to disable itself I think is troublesome.”

During debate last night on my amendment to defund the 2026 kill-switch mandate for cars, some Democrats claimed the technology wouldn’t monitor or disable cars. Here’s the actual law I had to read to them:

In a statement after the vote, Massie indicated that the right to travel in the United States “is fundamental, but the government has mandated a kill switch in new vehicles sold after 2026.”
“The kill-switch will monitor driver performance and disable cars based on the information gathered,” he added. “We will vote on my amendment to defund this mandate tonight.”
There were actually two Democrats who voted for Massie’s amendment: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wa.).
“I propose a bill requiring a kill switch in all new politicians in 2026,” joked one commenter.
“I would settle that if you vote someone in and they don’t do as promised, the voters get shock buzzers to shock them daily until they do,” responded another.
“This goes beyond RINO and borders very close to Big Brother,” said another. “And the politicians who voted to pass this bill should themselves be given a pass to go home and stay there in the very next election.”
